If you’re like some gamers out there, or even my mom, then you have a Mt. Everest sized pile of embarrassing Guitar Hero and Rock Band plastic instruments in your basement that you never thought you’d be using again. Well, guess what. You’ll be able to fire up your old axes on Rock Band 4 for free if you own a PlayStation 4.

If you’re on Xbox One, you’ll have to pony up an extra $20 for the “Legacy Game Controller Adapter.” How’s that for the least subtle PR name of all time?

So yes, stand-alone pre-orders are now open, and the PlayStation 4 version of Rock Band 4 costs $59.99, and the Xbox One version costs $79.99 with the adapter bundled inside. Before we jump to conclusions that this is malicious in any way, this must be accepted as “the way it is,” because Microsoft changed the wireless controller communications between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

“We worked closely with Microsoft to let players use their legacy Rock Band and third party guitars and drums on the Xbox One, as we all understood the value there.”

It’s a pain in the butt, but there’s not much to be done about it. Harmonix also confirmed that the game does not support USB instruments.

Those who would rather pony up and buy the entire set with the game, guitar, drums, and microphone, that’ll cost $249.99. The bundle with the guitar alone costs $129.99. Rock Band 4 launches on Oct. 6 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
